7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like most people, your gutters are not something you really worry about. They need biannual gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their functionality is very simple.

It’s not until rain gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you understand how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most homes in Eden Prairie. They blend into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner chose copper or wood … building materials that are definitely designed to stand out! Most home exteriors are crafted from durable but lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of gutters is to create a route of minimal resistance for rain and snow to get off your roof as fast as possible. When they are in good shape, your gutters will direct runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mildew and mold, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaks, and the gutters themselves from wear and rust.

When gutters are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home and surrounding property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too easy to fix to be the cause of any major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is easy and safe. If you identify any of the following issues, it’s a strong indication that your gutters have some type of damage.

Once you identify a possible gutter issue, you can decide whether it’s something you are comfortable fixing or remedying by yourself or if it’s something you should call a gutter company for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Sitting water near your home is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not directing the water runoff away from your home the way they are supposed to. Pooling water can cause mold, weakening of your foundation, and creates the perfect habitat for pesky mosquitoes. And, it will leave the areas around your home constantly soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Mold or mildew is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the rain gutters or the sides of your home. Mold and mildew mean that there is too much moisture around that area – a potential issue with the gutters could be the cause. Remember that mold and mildew are more likely to grow on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where they’re appearing, it might be because that area doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight. This is a time where the advice and knowledge of a gutter specialist in Eden Prairie would be a great help.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You will need to wait until it’s raining to look for this gutter issue. Hopefully this doesn’t mean you have gutter damage. It might just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and should be cleaned out. Either way, you want to have it looked at right away.

Basement Leaks

Depending on the design of your basement, the leaking might be due to any number of things. The pooling issue we discussed before could definitely lead to a basement leak. Egress windows and cinder block walls will only block out so much water. That’s why it is so necessary to keep your gutters in good condition!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Gutters empty directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be designed to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool in areas where it shouldn’t. This rain water can kill plants either by force or by overwatering. It will also displace flower bed building materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are the first sign that there is excessive moisture on a surface. Water marks are left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated. You will usually see water marks right under the rain gutters or directly behind the downspouts. This is a typically a sign that water is streaming down the outside of the gutters and not staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they have damage. After a storm, it’s a smart idea to walk around your house to assess any possible damage to the roof, outer walls, and rain gutters. These inspections are in addition to any standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are a few easy ways Eden Prairie Gutters recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least once a year. You can lengthen the time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out. As with anything else, the better you care for your rain gutters, the less issues you’ll have with them.

The optimal time to clean out gutters is in the spring, but to be extra cautious, give them a cleaning in the fall, too. Many homeowners choose to clean their gutters on their own, but there are local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the work or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can often be visible from the outside of the gutters. Just a fast inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – should reveal any of the issues we discussed above.

We’d recommend that you do an exterior home inspection at the end of each season to be sure that your gutters are working correctly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Fixing an issue before it becomes too bad can save you time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably.

However, if you let the problem go on too long, you could end up making repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
